Forgiveness is such a powerful tool against the robber of our joy. Many of us are stuck believing that forgiveness is mainly for the other person. We subconsciously think we are letting them off the hook. The truth is forgiveness is the very tool you need in order to truly heal. The people who hurt you will move on with their lives and continue to do them maybe never even acknowledging how they have hurt you or even realize. they have moved on but you holding on to unforgiveness will leave you stuck in the same place broken and angry. When you choose to forgive, it releases you from the bondage of anger and the roots of bitterness. The act of forgiveness is rising above the offense! In essence you are saying to that person, although you have bruised my heart, although you have hurt me” I will rise above! you cant break me! I will not hold my head down. I will not be contaminated with anger, bitterness or frustration against you or anyone. My Joy is full! I forgive you! That’s powerful!
The scripture says you will overcome evil with Good.
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12: 17-21
We have to believe what the scripture says, There is so much more power in doing good than evil.
Truth #2 Forgiveness is the very nature of our God. We serve a merciful, forgiving and loving God. He forgives us of our sins. All the times we fail him he forgives us, loves us and embraces us. We are in just as much need of forgiveness as anyone who has hurt us. We all make mistakes and we all have the capacity to hurt others. We are instructed in scripture to forgive others as Christ forgives us. He who wants mercy, must first show himself merciful.
For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Romans 3:23
Truth#3 Forgiveness is not a option. In order to be forgiven we must forgive. Taking vengeance in our own hands, repaying evil for evil will only lead us to death. The consequence to sin is death.
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23
Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil. For the evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land. Psalms 37:8-9
And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against anyone, so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” Mark 11:25
These are 3 things I learned about forgiveness, it may not always be easy and most of the time it is a process, but the results are freedom. I encourage everyone to pray about forgiveness, ask God for clarity, research the scriptures yourself and share. As believers we are all here to strengthen on another. so comment below!
